When it comes to gaming, saving money probably doesn’t immediately come to your mind. In fact, it’s probably the opposite. Most avid gamers find themselves quickly spending their paycheck, allowance, or birthday money on buying the newest game, console, accessory, or in-game download. It’s quite easy to see how gaming-related purchases can add up quickly. Well, the good news for you is that it is indeed possible to save money on gaming by using credit cards to earn rewards and cashback on your gaming purchases. Below, we’ve put together a list of our recommendations for the 5 best credit cards for gamers and explain how you can use each to maximize your savings.

When evaluating the best credit cards for gamers, the key is to make sure the credit card you select provides you with the most return value for your spending on gaming. Our 5 best credit cards for gamers are the: GameStop PowerUp Rewards Credit Card, PlayStation Visa Card, Citi Double Cash Back Card, Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, and My Best Buy Visa Card. Each of these cards provides you with perks or value that are ideally positioned for serious gamers and those who frequently spend money on gaming purchases.

So what are the best credit cards for gamers?

best credit cards for gamers

#5: GameStop PowerUp Rewards Credit Card

The first card on our list might be sort of an obvious one, simply because of its affiliation to a certain popular video game mecca, GameStop. Although it has a limited set of benefits and perks, a serious gamer must at least consider the GameStop PowerUp Rewards card when evaluating the best credit cards for gamers.

It’s important to know upfront that this card is really only a good choice for gamers who frequently shop at GameStop. That’s because you can ONLY use this credit card at GameStop. It’s not affiliated with a major credit card issuer like Mastercard, Visa, or American Express, so you’ll only be able to use it while shopping at GameStop either in-store or online.

GameStop PowerUp Rewards Credit Card benefits

With this card, GameStop offers 5,000 bonus points for every $250 you spend on the card. So if you spend $1,000 at GameStop in a calendar year, you should expect to receive a total of 20,000 bonus points ($5,000 multiplied by 4). They, unfortunately, do not give you points on a per-dollar basis, so your total earning potential on this card is not as generous as other credit cards. You can redeem the bonus points you earn on the card through the PowerUp Rewards program to get in-store coupons, digital currency, sweepstakes entries, and more.

The card also currently offers a small sign-up bonus when you complete your first purchase on the card. How many bonus points you get will depend on what level in the GameStop PowerUp Rewards program you currently hold. If you are a Pro or Elite Pro (both require an annual fee), you’ll get 15,000 bonus points. If you are a Player (free), you’ll get 5,000 points. However, don’t get too excited as 1,000 bonus points in this rewards program is estimated only to equal $1. So at the end of the day, this sign-up bonus isn’t actually worth that much (either $15 or $5).

The good news is that the GameStop PowerUp Rewards card has no annual fee, so once you’re approved for the card, you won’t have to pay an annual membership fee to simply own the card. Finally, in addition to earning points, cardholders will also get access to certain exclusive offers and promotions.

Gaming highlights

  • 5,000 bonus points for every $250 spent at GameStop
  • 15,000 or 5,000 point sign-up bonus
  • No annual fee

Conclusion

To put it simply, If you frequently shop at GameStop and plan on continuing to do so, this is going to be the card for you. You’ll get extra bonus points through purchases made on the credit card in addition to what you already earn for being part of the GameStop PowerUp Rewards program. Once you have enough points saved up, you can cash them in for coupons, digital currency, and other things to help you score free video games and much more.

#4: PlayStation Visa Card

Our next card on the list is brought to you by one of the top video game console makers in the world. It’s the only one of the “big three gaming console makers” to offer a branded credit card, which makes it particularly intriguing. So what is the credit card? It’s called the PlayStation Visa Card, which is offered by Sony in partnership with Capital One and Visa. The card is associated with Sony’s gaming rewards program called Sony Rewards.

Unlike the GameStop PowerUp Rewards card, cardholders can use the PlayStation Card anywhere that accepts Visa. This means the opportunity to earn Sony Rewards points goes up exponentially because you can charge almost any purchase on this piece of plastic. The exact amount of points you’ll earn on purchases depends on what type of spending the purchase is classified under.

PlayStation Card benefits

You’ll get 5x points for purchases made at the PlayStation store (online). You can also get 5x points for buying PlayStation and Sony products at authorized retailers, but you must also submit a Sony Rewards Bonus Points form (needs to be physically mailed in .. yes, even in 2018). If you pay your mobile phone bill with the PlayStation Card, you’ll earn 3x points. All other purchases will give you one point per $1 spent. In addition to your normal points earning, Sony is also offering a sign-up bonus in which new cardholders can earn a $50 PlayStation Store code after making their first card purchase. This is a much higher sign-up bonus than what GameStop offers with their card. The PlayStation card also has no annual fee, which is a nice added bonus!

On top of earning points, PlayStation Card cardholders get access to the following exclusive benefits:

  • 50% back as a statement credit off a 12-month PlayStation Plus membership after you spend $3,000 on purchases you make within a year.
  • 10% back as a statement credit off of PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Now, and PlayStation Music.
  • Access to pre-sale tickets to select music and sporting events.

When you’re ready to cash in your points, your rewards can be redeemed on a ton of different gaming options, such as free video games, controllers, other accessories, and more. You can see the full catalog of gaming related items in the Sony Rewards store here. In addition to the great gaming rewards you can use your points on, Sony also lets you redeem your points on movies, music, electronics, gift cards, and more through the Sony Rewards store.

Gaming highlights

  • Earn Sony Rewards points on all purchases
  • Use your Sony Rewards points to cash in on free video games and more
  • No annual fee

Conclusion

The PlayStation Card is great if you own and frequently play on a Sony PlayStation console. If you play on other consoles like the Nintendo Switch or Microsoft Xbox, this probably won’t be the best credit card for you. One of the main benefits of the PlayStation Card is that you can use the points you earn from spending to get free PlayStation video games from the Sony Rewards program. So if you’re not a member of Sony Rewards or don’t utilize the benefits it provides, we suggest applying for another credit card that could get you more rewards for gaming.

#3: Citi Double Cash Back Card

The next card on our list probably doesn’t immediately come to your mind as a top card for gaming. However, you can’t beat the value that the Citi Double Cash Back card gives cardholders. With this credit card, you’ll get unlimited 2% cashback on all purchases made on the card. So whether you find yourself pre-ordering the new Call of Duty, or buying the hottest game console out, or upgrading your accessories for gaming, you’ll get 2% back on all of this. Period.

Citi breaks up the cashback into two-parts for this card. You’ll get the initial 1% cashback from merely making a purchase. Once you pay your bill, you’ll get the other 1% cashback, for a total of 2%. Even though 2% may seem pretty meager, trust us that the cashback savings can add up quickly, mainly if you use this card for all of your spendings and not just gaming.

In addition to the cashback offer for this card, the Citi Double Cash Back card also gives you access to Citi Private Pass. Citi Private Pass gives you exclusive access to purchase tickets for thousands of events, including presale tickets and VIP packages to concerts, sporting events, dining experiences and more. The offerings for live events is a pretty cool feature and has a decent array of options.

Gaming highlights

  • Uncapped 2% cashback on all purchases
  • Access to Citi Private Pass
  • No annual fee

Conclusion

The Citi Double Cash Back card may not be a financial game-changer in your gaming life, but is a fantastic way to save up money for your future gaming related purchases. You could use the 2% cashback you earn with this card and turn that money into buying new video games, consoles, accessories and much more. And it’s this simple formula that lands this credit card on our list for 5 best credit cards for gamers.

#2: Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card

If you’re an avid gamer, chances are you’ve purchased a gaming related item before on Amazon.com. Between competitive pricing between independent sellers, the vast collection of available video games, and free two-day shipping (if you have Amazon Prime), Amazon is a major player when it comes to the world of gaming. And that’s exactly why the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card comes up as the #2 card on our list of best credit cards for gamers.

Amazon has several options when it comes to credit cards (all four of which have no annual fee). They have two Amazon Rewards Visa Cards and two Amazon.com Store Cards. For gaming, we recommend one of the two Amazon Rewards Visa Cards, either the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card or the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card. The difference between these two cards is that in order to have the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, you must already have an Amazon Prime Membership, which costs $119 per year. So while technically this credit card doesn’t have an annual fee, you have to pay the annual Prime Membership fee in order to own it.

For this review, we will cover the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card (the one that does not require a Prime Membership).

Earning and redeeming with the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card rewards cardholders with rewards points. How many points you earn will depend on the type of purchase you make. You’ll earn 3% back in points on purchases made on Amazon.com or Whole Foods Market. This is huge for gamers who buy a ton of products on Amazon. So if you spend $100 on an Amazon.com order, you should expect to earn 300 rewards points for this purchase.

In addition to this, you’ll earn 2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores and 1% back on all other purchases. So no matter where you use your card, you’ll earn money back in the form of points that you can use on Amazon. There is no cap on the number of points you can earn on your purchases. If you have a Prime Membership and own the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, you’ll get a whopping 5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods Market purchases!

You can then apply your rewards points to pay for the full or partial amount of a future order on Amazon. This means the next time you want to buy a new video game or gaming accessory, you’ll be able to save money by using Shop with Points on Amazon. This ‘Shop with Points‘ feature is available during check-out.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card benefits

In addition to earning points, cardholders also get access to the following perks:

  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Room upgrades and VIP guest status at premium properties in the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection
  • Complimentary Visa Signature Concierge Service available 24/7
  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Roadside dispatch
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Purchase protection
  • Extended warranty protection

Again, the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card card has no annual fee, which is a nice perk. Plus, Amazon has a sign-up bonus which gives new cardholders a $50 Amazon.com Gift Card upon approval.

Gaming highlights

  • 3% back on all Amazon purchases (uncapped)
  • 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores (uncapped)
  • 1% back on all other purchases (uncapped)
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No annual fee

Conclusion

To simply put it, the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is one of the best credit cards for gamers. As a central destination for your gaming needs, Amazon offers gamers competitive prices and a wide variety of games, consoles, and accessories at great prices. Realistically, you’re probably going to use Amazon at some point to make a gaming purchase, so why not earn points from those purchases that you can then apply towards savings on future purchases?

#1: My Best Buy Visa Card

I bet you didn’t think this would be our top card on the list for best credit cards for gamers! Best Buy is one of the few electronics and entertainment retailers that have survived the revolution of online shopping. While other retailers like Circuit City shut down due to poor sales, Best Buy has survived and is one of the top destinations for electronics purchases. They have quite a large and extensive collection for video gaming, which includes gaming consoles, video games, and accessories. The My Best Buy Visa Card just barely edges out the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card, and you’ll soon find out why.

The My Best Buy Visa Card works in tandem with the Best Buy Rewards program. So on top of the rewards and perks you get with the Best Buy Rewards Program, you’ll also earn in additional ways with the My Best Buy Visa Card. This is a great way to earn rewards faster!

My Best Buy Visa Card benefits

With the My Best Buy Visa Card, cardholders get rewarded for all purchases in the form of Best Buy Rewards. Like most other credit cards, the amount that you earn in rewards ultimately depends on the spend category. Some of your purchases are going to be worth more than others. When shopping at Best Buy or online at www.BestBuy.com, you’ll earn 5% back in rewards. If you happen to be a Best Buy Elite Plus member, you’ll earn 6%(!) back in rewards for Best Buy purchases. That’s the highest percent back we’ve seen with any credit card. Period. You’ll also get 2% back on your dining and grocery purchases, and 1% back on all other purchases.

So for example, if you spend $500 on a Best Buy purchase, you’ll earn 5% back. This would equate to a $25 Best Buy Rewards certificate, or 1250 points (250 Best Buy points = $5). If you spend $500 at the grocery store, you’d get 2% back in rewards, which equals 500 points, or a $10 Best Buy Rewards certificate.

The My Best Buy Visa Card will occasionally have special rewards earning promotions in which certain spend categories will earn you a higher percentage back than usual. For example, at the time this article was written, Best Buy was offering 4% in rewards on entertainment purchases, which includes games, movies, music, sporting events, attractions, vacations and more. They also had a special promotion for earning 3% back on gas purchases. These are limited-time-only promotions, but help you accelerate your earning by offering 2-3% more than you would normally earn. Always make sure to check in at their website to see what new promotions are running to maximize your savings!

Best Buy Rewards Certificates

Once you accumulate 250 My Best Buy points, you’ll earn a $5 reward certificate, which you can use on any Best Buy purchase, including any items related to gaming like games, consoles, and accessories. Most members will receive a rewards certificate automatically by email once they hit the 250 points mark. However, you can adjust you certificate preference level to be higher than 250 points or if you’re an Elite or Elite Plus member, you can ‘bank’ your points, meaning they’ll never expire until they are converted to a rewards certificate.

Gaming highlights

  • 5% back on all Best Buy purchases (uncapped)
  • 2% back on dining and grocery purchases (uncapped)
  • 1% back on all other purchases (uncapped)
  • Special limited-time-only % back promotions
  • Stack your credit card earnings on top of Best Buy Rewards Program earnings
  • No annual fee

Conclusion

The My Best Buy Rewards Visa card gives you the most flexibility and earnings in one card. At Best Buy, you’re able to purchase all types of video games, consoles, accessories, and more. This is key because it gives you the flexibility of choices, meaning you don’t have to be loyal to one brand like Nintendo or Sony. Instead, you can shop around and take advantage of all the choices offered. On top of this, the My Best Buy Rewards Visa card gives the highest cash back earning on video game related purchases (5% minimum, and even 6% if you reach Elite Plus state in the Best Buy Rewards Program). It’s the combination of these two things (the flexibility and earning potential) that make the My Best Buy Rewards Visa card the top on our list of best credit cards for gamers.
